Remembering John Gray
It is with great sadness that we share this collection of performances by our dear friend and fellow musician, John Gray, who passed away suddenly and far too soon, on Thursday 11th June 2026.
John was a much-loved member of Cruden Bay Folk Club, bringing friendship, good humour, and a love of music to our Friday night gatherings. Whether performing at the club, joining in sessions, or sharing stories between songs, he was very much one of us and an important part of the community that makes our folk club what it is.
Beyond the club itself, John was a regular and enthusiastic participant in our outreach concert parties, helping to bring music, laughter, and companionship to audiences throughout the local area. He understood that folk music is as much about sharing and connecting as it is about performing, and he gave his time generously whenever there was an opportunity to do so.
John was also a familiar face at folk clubs across the North East and further afield. Many musicians, organisers, and friends throughout the wider folk community will feel the loss of his company, his conversation, and his contribution to the sessions and singarounds that he so enjoyed.
Many who knew John will forever associate him with his signature rendition of The Gambler. It was a song he sang with warmth, conviction, and a knowing smile. The famous advice to “know when to hold ’em” seemed to reflect something of John’s practical outlook and easy-going nature, qualities that endeared him to so many.
As we remember John, we are grateful to have these recordings that capture not only his music but also something of the spirit he brought to every gathering. Each performance is a reminder of the enjoyment he found in sharing songs with friends, whether at Cruden Bay, at outreach events, or at the many other clubs and sessions he supported over the years.
John’s passing leaves an empty chair and a quieter room, but his friendship, his songs, and the memories he helped create remain with us. We hope this collection serves as a fitting tribute to a fellow musician, a good friend, and a valued member of our folk community.
Rest in peace, John. The music goes on, and so will the memories.
